Energy Audit = $avings for You and the Environment

An energy audit, including a blower door test and infrared scanning, is one of the home energy solutions offered by our company.

Have you ever wondered why your heating and cooling bills are so high? Inadequate insulation and air leakage are the leading culprits; they cause drafty areas, uneven room temperatures and high utility bills. An Energy Audit may be your answer.

Purpose of an Energy Audit

An Energy Audit will determine where and how much air is leaking out of or into your home, and find areas that are either missing insulation or are poorly insulated. It is possible that the air in your house is leaking through ceilings, walls, attics, basements and crawl spaces. If there is air leakage, it will continue to cost more every year as the price tag of energy increases, causing you to have a high energy bill and an uncomfortable home.

How can I tell if my home has uncontrolled air leakage or needs more insulation?

Look for the following signs:

  • Heating & cooling bills are high
  • Rooms in the home feel drafty
  • Room temperatures are uneven
  • Windows with condensation
  • Icicles and ice damming from eaves
  • Snow melts off roof quickly
  • Humidity in home too humid or too dry
  • Musty odors or other signs of mold
  • Dark stains on edges of carpet
  • Ghosting lines on ceilings and walls

Energy Waste

Inadequate insulation and air leakage are the leading cause of energy waste. Heating and cooling accounts for 50% to 70% of the energy used in the average home. Unless your home was constructed with special attention to energy efficiency, adding insulation and air sealing will reduce your heating and cooling bills.

Home Performance

Many factors contribute to the performance of the components that work together to heat or cool your home. A high efficiency furnace and air conditioner, double-paned insulated windows, properly installed insulation, and air sealing will create a comfortable dwelling with very low energy bills. We can identify problems and help you create a plan to save both energy and money.

Energy Audit Preparation

Before our Energy Auditor visits your house, make a list of any existing problems such as condensation and uncomfortable or drafty rooms. Have copies or a summary of the home’s yearly energy bills. Auditors use this information to establish what to look for during the audit. Factors to be considered include size of the home, number of windows, the amount of insulation, the age of the furnace and older appliances, and the residents’ behavior (including the number of people living in the home, the average thermostat setting, and other factors that contribute to high energy usage). Your answers may help uncover some simple cost-effective ways to reduce your energy consumption.

The energy auditor will be able to detect sources of energy loss and air leakage using specialized equipment such as a blower door, infrared camera, furnace efficiency meter and surface thermometers. You are welcome to watch, ask questions, and learn how you can make your home more comfortable, lower your energy bills and help save the environment.

The Energy Audit Will Include:

  • The blower door test results.
  • Infrared camera scan pictures.
  • A written report listing areas for possible improvement and energy savings.
  • With this information you can “Go Green, $ave Green, Feel Great”.

Blower Door Testing

To perform a thorough energy efficiency analysis of your home, energy auditors use specially-designed “blower door” test equipment to measure your home’s rate of air leakage. The blower door is a variable-speed fan mounted on an adjustable panel that can fit into any exterior door opening of your home.

The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings. The test indicates specifically where air leakage is occurring, and how much. This allows insulation or air sealing to be applied where needed.

Infrared Camera Scans

The infrared camera scans will show where your home could be missing insulation and/or have air leaks or moisture problems, by emitting a color change in the photos due to the temperature differences of these areas.
